Together, we continue to strengthen the bridge between our two nations.

German Unity Day is celebrated annually on October 3.

German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is the national holiday of Germany, observed on October 3 each year to commemorate the formal reunification of East and West Germany in 1990. This day marks the dissolution of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and its accession to the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), creating a single, unified German state for the first time since 1945.

Historical Context

The reunification followed the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, which symbolized the end of the division between East and West Germany. After months of negotiations and preparations, the reunification was officially completed on October 3, 1990, which is why this date was chosen as the national holiday instead of November 9, a date associated with both historical German Republic events and tragic Nazi-led pogroms. Prior to 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany had celebrated German Unity Day on June 17, commemorating the 1953 East German uprising.

Celebrations

German Unity Day is a public holiday nationwide, meaning schools, most businesses, and government offices are closed. Celebrations include political speeches, concerts, communal meals, cultural exhibitions, and fireworks. Each year, a different German city hosts the main festivities, while other cities also hold local events. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin serves as a powerful symbol of reunification and is often central to the celebrations.
This day not only honors the historical achievement of reunification but also celebrates peace, freedom, and national unity in modern Germany
